Holdur Car Rental - Europcar - Akureyri Downtown

We rented an electric car from the Europcar at the airport and it was not great. Charging at 1/3 of what we thought, taking 7 hours to fully charge. I called Europcar to complain and ask what they could do. They gave us a Tesla in Akureyri and apologized for the other car. Extra perk, Europcar covers charging at Tesla fast chargers.

Very nice car rental company located right outside the cruise terminal. Walking distance from the ship. Car was clean and very well maintained. Staff friendly and welcoming.

I’ve been to Iceland many times and usually rent a vehicle from a local hire company in the capital or at the airport. On my most recent trip this month, I was taking a direct flight from the UK to Akureyri, so I asked several Icelandic friends for a recommendation for a car hire company based there. They all said the same thing - go to Höldur, Europcar’s franchisee in Iceland and the biggest car rental provider with rental locations all over the country. That was excellent advice - and now I know who I’ll be hiring from when I come back to Iceland next time, too. I was offered a very competitive deal for a 4WD Hyundai Tucson to take me safely across the icy roads of North Iceland. The offer also included comprehensive insurance with reduced excess, so I could just relax and simply enjoy the stunning scenery. The booking process was smooth and straightforward, with swift responses to my queries. When I came to collect the car, it took just a few minutes to complete the paperwork and pick up the keys - all done rather quicker than I’ve experienced with other car hire companies. The car itself was immaculate, powerful and a dream to drive - once I’d worked out how to change the language on the displays from German to English! And when I decided to extend the hire period for an extra day, that was another seamless process, allowing me more time to explore. Even better, it was easy to drop the car back at the airport instead of the city office where I’d picked it up. That made a big difference on my last day, saving me time and an expensive taxi ride. Every single Höldur employee that I encountered was professional, calm and courteous. I could name them, but I’m convinced everyone there delivers the same standard of service. I couldn’t have asked for more. And I’ll be back.

Good experience. The prices are extremely high and we had a delay by one day in flight time so were very concerned about more than doubling the prices, but my wife got it all taken care of on the telephone. Sure enough they had everything ready for us and we even had a nice employee help with our hotspot during our journey in Akureyri. We enjoyed the little Suzuki hybrid and got excellent gas mileage.

We picked up the car (a Toyota RAV4x4) on June 2nd, 2025, in Akureyri. Snow had been forecast. The next morning, in the Mývatn region, we woke up to 10 cm of snow. We had to hit the road to continue our road trip, but quickly realized that the car had no grip at all — despite the driver’s experience driving in snowy conditions. To our shock, we discovered that the car was fitted with summer tires! We contacted the rental agency, which told us they don’t equip cars with winter tires in summer, claiming the roads were warm and the snow would melt quickly. This is seriously compromising our safety!
